St. John’s Falls to Marquette in Three Sets

Giorgia Walther notched 13 kills for the Red Storm
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 15, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Marquette in three sets on Friday night.
The Red Storm (12-9, 3-4 BIG EAST) dropped the first two sets, 25-23, before falling in the third set, 25-22.
Marquette advances to 15-3 on the season and 6-1 in BIG EAST play. Its only loss of league play came against then-no. 19 Creighton.
Giorgia Walther recorded a team high 13 kills on a .400 hitting percentage. She also tallied one service ace and six digs.
Rachele Rastelli notched 11 kills, two aces, five digs and three block assists while Eleonora Tosi recorded three kills, one service ace and four block assists. Tiziana Baumrukova and Wiktoria Kowalczyk split the setter position tallying 13 assists and 15 helpers, respectively.
Defensively, Maria Angelica Palacios recorded three solo blocks and two block assists while Jovana Askovic notched two block assists. Sheena Yoshioka had a team-high 11 digs.
St. John's edged the Golden Eagles in blocks, 9-6.
Down 7-2 in the first set, the Red Storm went on a 7-2 run to knot the score at 9. The Golden Eagles responded with a 6-1 spurt to take the lead at 15-10. With Marquette at set point, the Johnnies responded with three straight points, including two block assists by Tosi. A Savannah Rennie kill gave the Golden Eagles the set, 25-23.
In the second set Marquette was up 21-17 when Walther spiked five kills on a 7-3 spurt to get within one at 24-23. The Golden Eagles took the set on a Hope Werch kill, 25-23.
After 13 tie scores in the third set, the Red Storm led 19-17. Marquette went off on a 6-1 run to take the lead 23-20. The Johnnies responded with two points before the Golden Eagles captured the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-0.
St. John's will play DePaul on Saturday at 7 p.m. inside the McGrath-Phillips Arena.
