St. John’s Hoops Celebration Rocks Carnesecca Arena
QUEENS, N.Y. – The 2021-22 basketball season officially got underway on Friday night at Carnesecca Arena with Red Storm Tip-Off. The annual celebration drew more than 4,000 St. John's students to Carnesecca Arena for the first ticketed event at the venue since March 1, 2020. A performance by Fivio Foreign capped off the festivities.
Prior to Fivio Foreign taking the floor, fans were introduced to the 2021-22 men's and women's basketball teams. The men's team returns two BIG EAST major award winners in Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander and is led by 2021 BIG EAST Coach of Year Mike Anderson. The women's squad welcomes back All-BIG EAST First Team selection Leilani Correa and is led by Joe Tartamella, who is just five victories away from becoming the winningest coaching in program history.
Tartamella, Anderson and Correa all addressed the capacity crowd, thanking students for their attendance and asking them to bring that same energy to Red Storm home games throughout the season.
The men's team then divided up for a split-squad scrimmage, as the Red and White teams finished the 16-minute game in a 50-50 tie.
Fivio Foreign's performance closed Tip-Off, as students, alumni and season ticket holders were treated to a show from one of New York's most popular artists.
