St. John’s Drops Four Set Match against DePaul

QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to DePaul in four sets on Friday night.
DePaul (14-11, 7-6 BIG EAST) took the first set, 25-20, before the Red Storm took the second set, 25-20. The Blue Demons closed the match with set scores of 25-23, and 25-22, respectively.
Reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week Rachele Rastelli tallied a match-high 17 kills to go along with three service aces and two block assists.
The BIG EAST's leader in blocks, Ariadni Kathariou, contributed 13 kills on a .417 hitting percentage, two solo blocks, five block assists and a service ace for a total of 18.5 points. Maria Angelica Palacios notched seven kills on a .333 clip along with two solo blocks and a block assist while Iliana Rodriguez added in three service aces.
Eleonora Tosi notched 10 kills while Giorgia Walther recorded nine. Sheena Yoshioka had a match-high 20 digs along with one service ace while Tiziana Baumrukova recorded a match-high 38 assists.
St. John's outperformed DePaul in blocks, assists and digs.
With St. John's (14-13, 5-8 BIG EAST) down 11-10 in the first set, the Blue Demons went off on a 9-3 run to jump ahead to a 20-13 lead. The Red Storm retaliated recording a 7-2 spurt to get within two at 22-20. Kathariou led the run with two kills. DePaul captured the next three points to take the set, 25-22.
The Johnnies were up by one in the second set at 12-11 when they hit a 9-3 run to advance the lead to 21-14. Kathariou recorded three kills and a service ace during the spurt. DePaul logged six of the next 10 points but could not hold the Red Storm from its 25-20 set victory.
After the Blue Demons recorded the first three points of the third set, St. John's took off on a 10-2 run to get ahead, 10-5. Rastelli recorded five of the Red Storm's 10 points. The Blue Demons fought back knotting the score at 12. DePaul tallied 13 of the next 24 points with an Emma Price Kill ending the set at 25-23 in its favor.
St. John's was up, 21-18, in the fourth set before the Blue Demons hit a 7-1 spurt to capture the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
The Red Storm will face Marquette on Saturday at 4 p.m. continuing its four-game home-stand.
