Red Storm loses its fifth one-goal game of the spring
The St. John's men's soccer team closed its spring 2021 season on Saturday afternoon at Belson Stadium, falling to No. 2 Georgetown, 1-0.
With the loss, St. John's ends 2021 with a 5-5-0 record while the Hoyas remain undefeated at 7-0-2.
Dante Polvara scored the lone goal of the match, his seventh of the year, for Georgetown near the end of the first half off an assist from Derek Dodson.
The Red Storm, who had not played since a March 20 win over Connecticut, took on the Hoyas despite being without 10 key players, including three backline starters, two of its leading scorers and half of its goalkeeping tandem, due to COVID protocols.
A number of freshmen made their debuts for St. John's. Aidan Borra was a member of the starting XI while Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau and Conlan Paventi entered in the second half.
In the 39th minute, Georgetown scored the decisive tally after a quick restart. Following a foul on Jack Russo near the top of the 18, Dodson ran to the ball and put it into play within a matter of seconds, quickly sending it to a streaking Polvara. The sophomore beat Gavran before the Red Storm had an opportunity to come set, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 edge.
St. John's recorded its best scoring opportunity to that point in the 68th minute, as Tani Oluwaseyi played a ball across the mouth of the goal toward a wide-open Wesley Leggett on the far post. The pass missed its target, however, and the Hoyas maintained their lead.
The Red Storm looked as if it might tie the game in the 83rd minute, as Leggett drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick opportunity for Matt Forster. The redshirt senior put a solid left-footed try on the ball that appeared to be tracking into the lower right-hand corner of the cage, but reigning BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Giannis Nikopolidis got a hand on it and turned aside the try.
The final shot count was 10-3 in favor of the Hoyas, including a 6-1 edge in shots on goals.
