St. John’s Falls to Western Kentucky in Three Sets

Red Storm captures second place at the WKU Invitational
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (Sept. 18, 2021) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to No. 23 Western Kentucky in straight sets on the final day of the WKU Invitational.
The Hilltoppers, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 last season, took the first frame 25-14, but only narrowly secured the second set, 25-21. WKU closed out the match in the third set, 25-14.
The Red Storm went 2-1 on the weekend, winning two matches on Friday against Austin Peay and Lipscomb to come in second place at the WKU Invitational. The pair of Friday victories extended the Johnnies' winning streak to eight, the program's longest since 2012.
In addition to the squad's second-place finish, two St. John's student-athletes were named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Eleonora Tosi received her second all-tournament honor this year while Sheena Yoshioka recorded her first career all-tournament accolade.
Rachele Rastelli and Klara Mikelova each recorded a team-high 10 kills on the match. Rastelli also contributed four digs, three block assists and one service ace while Mikelova added five digs and an ace.
Giorgia Walther tallied six kills while Tosi recorded two service aces. Bree Martin also notched one service ace while Jovana Askovic recorded the lone Red Storm solo block.
The Hilltoppers held the Red Storm to a .032 hitting percentage compared to its own .390 clip.
In the first set, St. John's grabbed the first two points before WKU responded with five straight points to take the lead. The Red Storm was unable to recover and a 20-12 run gave the Hilltoppers the set, 25-14.
St. John's was down 13-8 in the second set before a 6-1 run marked with two service aces by Tosi and two kills by Rastelli tied the set at 14. The teams traded blows until the Hilltoppers rattled off two straight points to close the set 25-21.
St. John's jumped out to an early lead in the third set, recording seven of the set's first 10 points. With the Red Storm up by three, 8-5, WKU recorded six straight points to kick off a 20-6 run to take the third set, 25-14, and the match 3-0.
The Red Storm is set to open conference play at Connecticut next Saturday, Sept. 25, at 5 p.m.
