St. John's drops to Xavier in Straight Sets

Red Storm concludes the regular season next weekend at home
CINCINNATI, Ohio (NOV. 13, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Xavier in straight sets on Sunday afternoon at the Cintas Center.
The Red Storm (17-13, 8-8 BIG EAST) are currently tied for fifth in the conference and the Musketeers (18-8,11-5) are in sole possession of third place.
Rachele Rastelli led the team in kills for the second straight match, with 14. Giorgia Walther was the other Johnnie with double-digit kills notching 10.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the team in the assists for the 28th time this season tallying helpers.
The first set was a thriller. Xavier led much of the set early on, but St. John's kept within fighting distance never allowing a lead of more than four. The Johnnies strung together three consecutive points to tie the set at 22, on two consecutive Rastelli kills. Another kill by Rastelli gave the Red Storm set point with a 24-23 lead. The Musketeers battled converting three straight set points against, to be tied for the final time at 27. Xavier used two kills by Anna Taylor to clinch the first stanza, 29-27. Rastelli led the Johnnies with 8 kills in the set, while hitting .412.
Xavier took full control in the second frame, never allowing the Red Storm to take the lead. Leading 10-9, Xavier used a 7-0 run to distance the Red Storm. The Musketeers cruised to a 25-15 victory in the second stanza. Martin had eight of her team-leading 16 digs in the second frame.
Xavier controlled the third set once again never allowing St. John's to gain any momentum. The Red Storm were never able to take the lead despite tying four times during the frame. The two teams tied at each points for the first four points of the set, and the Red Storm were never able to catch back up, with Xavier taking the third and final set, 25-14.
St. John's will close the regular season next weekend hosting Villanova and Georgetown. The Red Storm will open the weekend on Friday night at 7 p.m. St. John's will hold senior day on Sunday against Georgetown at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on BEDN on Flo Sports.
