Red Storm closes campaign on Wednesday night in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE – The St. John's men's soccer team saw its 2022 campaign come to a close on Wednesday night with a 5-1 loss to Marquette at Valley Fields.
The Red Storm (4-8-5, 2-4-4 BIG EAST) entered the match still in contention for a BIG EAST Tournament berth, but was unable to secure the three points it needed to clinch a postseason spot.
Wesley Leggett scored the lone goal for the Red Storm, his fourth of the season.
The Red Storm recorded the game's first scoring chances, as Antek Sienkiel and Adrian Roseth put two shots on goal in the sixth minute, both of which were saved by Chandler Hallwood.
Just one minute later, the Golden Eagles took the lead. Beto Soto stood over a free kick just outside the right edge of the box and set a left-footed in-swinger into the left-side upper 90, putting Marquette ahead 1-0.
The Golden Eagles (5-9-4, 1-5-4 BIG EAST) added onto their lead in the 34th minute, as a Lukas Sunesson converted on a penalty kick to put Marquette on top by a pair.
After the ensuing kickoff, Nigel Griffith attempted to play a high ball with his right foot, which caught the head of a diving Marquette player and resulted in Griffith being shown a red card. Despite playing with only 10 men, the Red Storm registered the final four shots of the half, two by Leggett and two by Einar Lye.
St. John's and Marquette went scoreless for the first 25 minutes of the second half before the Golden Eagles found the back of the net three times between the 72nd and 87th minutes.
Leggett tallied the Red Storm's lone goal on a penalty kick in the 90th minute.
