Red Storm will play Binghamton in the first round on Friday night
QUEENS, N.Y. (NOV. 27, 2022) – After a bittersweet fourth appearance in the last five years in the BIG EAST Tournament, the St. John's volleyball team has been selected to the NIVC for the second time in the same time period.
St. John's was placed in the four team pod hosted by Boston College. Binghamton and Buffalo are the other two teams selected in the group of four. The Red Storm will face off against the Bearcats of Binghamton on Friday, December 2nd at Boston College. The winner will advance to the second round for a date against the winner of Boston College and Buffalo.
The Red Storm are 6-2 against Binghamton including a 5-2 record against the Bobcats on a neutral court. The two squads have not met since the 2017 season, a neutral court match at Cornell University. St. John's was victorious in a sweep. Boston College is no stranger to the Red Storm, as St. John's handed the Eagles their second loss of the season in a five set thriller. Two other opponents from the Johnnies regular season were also selected. Both, Weber State and Xavier are among the 32 team field.
The NIVC is an annual tournament handing out automatic bids to the best team in each conference that were not selected to the NCAA Tournament. Not every team accepts the bid however, and these spots are filled by the next best teams based on RPI. In the BIG EAST, Xavier received the automatic bid, with St. John's earning an at-large bid. Binghamton received an automatic bid after winning the America East regular season crown, but falling to New Hampshire in the first round of the conference tournament.
Streaming information, tickets, and other match details will be released in the coming days.
