Red Storm senior center captures first career Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week honor after posting a career-high 23 points against Florida State

QUEENS, N.Y. – One day after being named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, St. John's senior center Joel Soriano received Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Week honors on Tuesday.

The Red Storm big man is the first Johnnie to earn MBWA Player of the Week honors since Julian Champagnie on Feb. 22, 2022.

The Yonkers native registered a career-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds and a pair blocks in a 93-79 victory over Florida State on Saturday. He shot 6-for-11 from the floor to go along with a career-best 11 made free throws.

This season, Soriano is averaging 15.2 points and ranks third in the NCAA with 12.6 boards per game. The 6-foot-11 center also leads Division I with 10 double-doubles.

St. John's returns to action on Wednesday, taking on Villanova inside Finneran Pavilion. Tip-off on FS1 is slated for 6:30 p.m.
