The Official Supermarket of St. John’s Athletics donates funds to help support St. John’s Bread & Life
QUEENS, N.Y. – During the 2021-22 college basketball season, St. John's Sports Properties and Food Bazaar Supermarket collaborated on a charitable initiative entitled Free Throws for Meals. As part of the program, Food Bazaar donated $10 in food for every free throw made by the St. John's men's basketball team during the season.
The Red Storm sank 359 free throws equating to $3,590 in food to be donated to St. John's Bread & Life in Brooklyn, New York. Food Bazaar Supermarket generously increased their donation to $10,000.
"Free Throws for Meals was a fun way to support our local community," said Kevin Waters, General Manager of St. John's Sports Properties. "Food Bazaar Supermarket electing to make such a significant increase in their donation makes the program that much more impactful, allowing St. John's Bread & Life to take care of that many more in need."
St. John's Bread & Life is one of the premier emergency food providers in New York City, distributing more than 3.2 million meals in 2021 and on target to serve 4 million meals by June 2022. Through on site pantry distribution, hot grab-and-go meals, the mobile pantry and mobile soup kitchen, they serve 64,000 households annually (or 192,000 people). More than 256,000 individuals have accessed their programs and services over the past year. Bread & Life provides a safety net for low income and low wage earners, the elderly and medically compromised, the homeless and those with chronic mental health issues.
"Our visit to St. John's Bread & Life was such a rewarding and awe-inspiring reminder of the much-needed services this outstanding organization provides to so many in our neighborhoods and communities. We are a very proud to partner with them and thank them for the compassion and devotion they deliver to thousands of families every day," said Suzanne Kuczun, Associate VP of Marketing & Development for Food Bazaar Supermarket.
Food Bazaar Supermarket expressed the desire to give back to an organization that St. John's University and its community have an active relationship. St. John's University students, faculty and employees have been volunteering at St. John's Bread & Life for decades.
"Bread and Life is so grateful to St. John's Athletics and Food Bazaar for partnering together to combat food insecurity in our community," said Executive Director of St. John's Bread & Life Sr. Caroline Tweedy, RSM. "This support makes it possible for guests to access healthy, nutritious food in a dignified and compassionate way."
