SANTIAGO DE LOS CABELLEROS – The St. John's men's basketball team improved to 2-0 during its exhibition tour of the Dominican Republic, defeating GUG All-Stars, 93-79, on Sunday.
Four Johnnies finished in double figures, led by Santo Domingo native David Jones with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting and added a team-high three steals.
Joel Soriano, also a longtime standout for the Dominican Republic on the international circuit alongside Jones, tallied 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and 10 rebounds for his second double-double in as many opportunities on the team's foreign tour.
Posh Alexander scored 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting and dished out a game-high eight assists.
Montez Mathis sank every shot he attempted, going 3-for-3 from the floor with a pair of triples and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to finish with 10 points.
Rafael Pinzon and O'Mar Stanley each made four of their seven field goal attempts, finishing with nine and eight points, respectively. Stanley also chipped in three steals.
As a team, St. John's shot 52.0 percent from the floor and connected on nine 3-pointers.
Leading by 11, 33-22, after 10 minutes of play, the Red Storm opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run to move ahead by 16, 40-24.
GUG All-Stars slowly narrowed their deficit in the closing minutes of the half, pulling within eight, 53-45, at the intermission.
GUG All-Stars kicked off the third quarter with a triple, pulling within five, 53-48, their smallest deficit since 5:01 mark of the opening stanza. From there, the rest of the quarter was all St. John's, as the Red Storm outscored their hosts 21-9 to take a 17-point lead, 74-57, into the final period.
The Red Storm led by as many as 20 in the final stanza before closing out the 93-79 win.
The Johnnies will play the final game of their foreign tour tomorrow night when they take on the Dominican Republic Senior National Team at 7 p.m. in Santo Domingo.
