St. John’s Overpowers Stonehill in Three Set Sweep, Claims Jack Kaiser Classic Title

Johnnies win their sixth straight Jack Kaiser Classic Title
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team overpowered Stonehill in a three-set sweep on its way to a sixth straight Jack Kaiser Classic title.
Set scores were 25-6, 25-23 and 25-11.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk, Giorgia Walther and Rachele Rastelli were named to the Jack Kaiser Classic All-Tournament team following impressive performances over the two-day slate. Kowalczyk, who tallied 60 kills and 11 blocks against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday morning, was named tournament MVP after registering 133 assists on the weekend and averaging 1.64 blocks per set over three contests.
Rastelli and Walther put down 11 kills each in the victory against Stonehill. Rastelli, who hit at a .368 clip, also added a service ace and five blocks. Walther tallied an ace and three blocks.
Lucrezia Lodi notched 10 kills and eight digs. Bree Martin recorded seven digs and four aces while Iliana Rodriguez finished with six digs and an ace.
Kowalczyk produced 34 assists, two aces and three blocks while Ariana Robinson had five blocks.
St. John's dominated in the first set, recording 13 straight points to close the set. The Johnnies hit at a .500 clip in the set while they held Stonehill to a -214 hitting percentage. Lodi led the Red Storm in the 25-6 win with five kills at a .714 clip.
The Johnnies recorded seven of the first nine points in the second set to get an early lead before Stonehill rallied to get within one, 14-15. No team was able to take a strong advantage for the remainder of the set, but a Lodi kill gave St. John's the 25-23 set win, and the 2-0 lead.
Like the first set, the third set was all Red Storm. The Johnnies hit at a .360 clip and held the Skyhawks to a .000 hitting percentage. The Red Storm also held a 6-2 edge in aces. Magda Stambrowska recorded four kills at a perfect 1.00 clip during the third set.
St. John's will return to action next weekend when it hosts the Red Storm Invitational, starting on Friday at 12 p.m. with a match against Columbia.
