Red Storm suffers fourth 1-0 defeat of the season
NEW YORK – Despite not being outshot by its opponent for the sixth time in six opportunities this season, the St. John's men's soccer team suffered its fourth loss of the campaign, as the Johnnies fell to Columbia, 1-0, at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
All four of the Red Storm's losses this season have been by a score of 1-0.
The Red Storm (1-4-1) dominated possession in the second half, but proved unable to net the equalizer. Columbia goalkeeper Michael Collodi made all three of his saves over the final 45 minutes and neutralized a number of St. John's threats in the air resulting from crosses and corner kicks.
Shots were even at five a side for the match, but the Red Storm enjoyed a 4-2 edge in the second half.
Neither side managed to manufacture a quality chance in the opening minutes of the game. The contest's first shot produced its only goal, as Joao Lima headed home a Jack Muoio cross from 10 yards out in the 27th minute.
Juston Rainey recorded the Red Storm's first shot in the 39th minute, but missed right of the cage. Columbia (1-2-1) tallied two shots in the closing minutes of the half, one of which required a stellar save from Zenden Hart to keep the deficit at one. Hart finished the evening with three stops.
Coming out of the intermission, the Red Storm exerted tremendous pressure almost from the opening kick. Antek Sienkiel took the team's first shot on goal in the 51st minute, but he was turned aside by Collodi. Aidan Borra, who had also registered a shot in the 48th minute, took a chance on target in the 67th, but Collodi made another stop for the Lions.
St. John's was not credited with another shot the rest of the way, but the Johnnies still played plenty of balls into the box over the final 20-plus minutes. None of those opportunities, however, resulted in a goal for the road team.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday night when it opens BIG EAST play against Georgetown on FS1. Opening kick-off from Belson Stadium is set for 8:30 p.m.
