Event raised more than $320,000 for the St. John’s men’s basketball program
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball program hosted the eighth annual Lou Carnesecca Golf Classic on Monday, raising more than $320,000 to support the Red Storm both on and off the court.
Since its inception, the Lou Carnesecca Golf Classic has raised more than $3.5 million for St. John's Men's Basketball.
The annual golf outing was held simultaneously at two of Long Island's most premier golf venues, North Hempstead Country Club and the Village Club at Sands Point. Following 18 holes at one of the two courses, more than 130 golfers and several additional dinner guests gathered at North Hempstead for a cocktail hour and the evening's formal program.
Attendees were welcomed by Athletic Director Mike Cragg, who began by recognizing the event's namesake, Lou Carnesecca, who occupied a prominent seat at the dinner. The 97-year-old former head coach was flocked by former players and assistant coaches from across seven decades.
After recognizing the former players in the crowd, Cragg passed the microphone to Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., the 18th President of St. John's University. A staunch advocate for Red Storm Athletics, Shanley implored the gathering to remain generous in their support of St. John's Basketball as the program looks to ascend to the top of the conference and the country.
Next to the podium was Head Coach Mike Anderson, who recognized members of his staff, thanked those in attendance and introduced several players from the 2022-23 Red Storm roster.
After a break for dinner, St. John's recognized the evening's two honorees: Vincent Iannelli '73NDC and Terence Mullin '93CBA. Both Iannelli and Mullin, the latter of whom was a four-year men's basketball winner, have been loyal and generous supporters of the program for decades.
