QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's and women's tennis programs hosted the Second-Annual West Side Tennis Club Event on Wednesday evening.
Over 60 attendees gathered at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills in support of the Red Storm tennis programs.
The evening began with participants taking to the club's beautiful grass courts for some friendly competition. Current players, alumni and supporters got the chance to interact, network and enjoy the game they love.
The tennis portion of evening concluded with a one-point wooden racquet tournament.
Director of Athletics Mike Cragg addressed the crowd as the participants enjoyed hors 'd'oevres and refreshments.
"We have two great tennis programs here [at St. John's] competing year in and year out for BIG EAST Championships," Cragg said. "We have something very special in hosting this event for the last two years and it will continue to grow and get bigger."
The next speaker was women's tennis was Head Coach Lauren Leo, who enters her seventh year at the helm. Leo is set to return her entire squad after tying a program record with 18 dual-match wins during 2021-22 campaign.
"Without you guys, there's a lot of stuff that wouldn't be possible for us to get done," Leo said to the supporters. "We have a great group of girls all returning from last year, both on-and-off the court."
The final speaker was men's tennis Head Coach Dillon Pottish, who enters his fifth season in Queens. Pottish's squad has made the BIG EAST Championship match all three times under his tutelage, including a conference title in 2019.
"Seeing your support and doing these events, allowing the current guys to connect with former players is so important," Pottish said. "We have a great group of guys and we hope to see you supporting in the spring"
The speaking portion concluded with both coaches introducing their 2022-23 rosters to the crowd, which features student-athletes from 13 different countries.
