Lamaille earns the Johnnies’ second major weekly accolade of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – After overcoming adversity in the team's 1-0 victory over RV Marquette, defender Thomas Lamaille earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week while goalkeeper Alec McLachlan secured a spot on the honor roll, as announced by the conference on Monday.
Lamaille is the second Johnnie this season to earn a major weekly honor, joining fellow back-line specialist Lenny Cidolit (Sept. 11), who also earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week.
The Villejuif, France native was instrumental on the Johnnies' back line, shifting into a center back role after the Red Storm lost two defenders to red cards with 34:28 remaining in the match. Playing a full 90 minutes, Lamaille helped the Johnnies keep the Golden Eagles' offense at bay, turning away all 19 shot opportunities and 17 corner kicks.
In the second half alone, the Red Storm staved off 17 Marquette shots, including 13 in the final third of the contest.
Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan logged his second clean sheet against the Golden Eagles en route to his first BIG EAST accolade.
His three saves came at a critical point where Marquette rattled off 10 shots over a span of 11:04 beginning in the 61st minute. After turning away Nico Pendleton's second opportunity at 64:39, the Johnnies' goalkeeper held his line on a low rip from Karim Abdoul Pare in the 65th minute before getting a hand on a redirected shot by Noah Madrigal at 68:50.
Lamaille, McLachlan and the Red Storm will return to action on Tuesday evening, taking on Columbia at Belson in a 7 p.m. tilt.
