Red Storm is unbeaten in its last seven contests
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The St. John's men's soccer team earned an impressive draw against perennial power No. 8 Georgetown on Saturday afternoon, 1-1.
The Red Storm is now unbeaten in its last seven contests while moving to 8-3-4 overall and 3-1-3 in BIG EAST play after the result at Shaw Field.
Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau fired in his 12th goal of the season in the first half for the equalizer. The redshirt junior continued his brilliant campaign and cracked the top 10 for goals in a single season with a dazzling finish in the 17th minute. The Canada national finished the afternoon with a team-high three shots, all on target.
Macoumba Ba recorded his fifth assist of the season while Eric Danquah tallied his second, both setting up Fleuriau Chateau for the equalizer Lenny Cidolit and Ba both registered a pair of shots each.
After allowing an early tally, goalkeeper Alec McLachlan shut out the powerful Hoyas' attack for the remaining 88 minutes and recorded three saves.
The Red Storm outshot the Hoyas, 10-6, putting six strikes on frame.
The Hoyas scored just 2:07 into the contest as Kenny Nielsen provided a service into the six-yard box and found Zach Zengue, who took a touch and struck the ball into the top corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm began to turn up its attacking prowess as the squad fired five shots in the opening half. On the fifth attempt, Danquah stretched the field to find his fellow Louisville transfer. Ba threaded the needle with a through-ball that split the Hoyas defense, skidding onto the boot of a sliding Fleuriau Chateau, who struck one on frame that deflected off the arm of the Georgetown goaltender and into the twine for a 1-1 tie.
In the final minute of the opening frame, Ba played another through-ball as Fleuriau Chateau nearly struck again with a turnaround blast that was knocked over the bar.
In the second half, the two sides battled but neither were able to break the stalemate. Ba and Martin Kozak delivered strikes in the final half.
In the 82nd minute, Georgetown's Kieran Sargent fired a low strike but McLachlan corralled it easily to keep the match level.
St. John's pressed for the game-winner in the final minute, seeing a cross from Cidolit fall into a threatening spot, but the Georgetown keeper was first to it.
The Red Storm will be back at home for its regular-season finale and Senior Day on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. against Creighton, part of Homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend on campus.
