The Red Storm have reached the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team is set to begin its fifth NCAA Tournament with its first round match against Stanford on Friday morning at 10 a.m. hosted by Columbia University at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish has guided his team to its second NCAA Championships appearance in four opportunities. Last week, he led the squad to its fourth-straight BIG EAST title match, taking home their second BIG EAST crown in four trips.
This is the Johnnies fifth NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. In the four previous tournaments, the Red Storm have played two matches each in Florida and Virginia. For the first time, the Red Storm will not be playing a national-ranked seed in the first round. In their previous four appearances, the Johnnies played the host school, a top 16 seed, each time.
On Wednesday, the Red Storm earned four honors from the BIG EAST Conference Office. The St. John's coach staff was named co-coaching staff of the year with the Creighton Bluejays. Diogo Marques was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year and was a unanimous ALL-BIG EAST First Team Selection. Carl Gustafsson also earned a unanimous spot of the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The Red Storm have notched 100 singles matches victories with five Johnnies having logged double-digit win totals on the season. The charge is led by Ryota Kaneda and Gustafsson each tallying 15 wins. Marques and Nishant Dabas have contributed 12 wins while only losing three matches.
In doubles play, the top pairing of Marques and Axel Vila Antuna went a perfect 3-0 at the BIG EAST Championships. Earlier in the season the pairing was ranked No. 54 by ITA after a perfect 1-0 start at Cornell. The duo enters the postseason, 7-3, the top record among doubles teams. Then duos of Gustafsson and Dabas and Adam Groves and Kaneda each logged six wins as tandems.
Stanford enters the tournament with a 14-10 overall record and is the ITA's No. 23 ranked team. The Cardinal knocked off three top-25 opponents earlier this season. Stanford's three players in the ITA Top 30 are the most by any team in the country. Arthur Fery enters the match as the nation's No. 4 player, sporting a 15-4 record in first court this season. No.15 Nishesh Basavareddy, No. 27 Max Basing and No. 56 Samir Banerjee are all ranked in the top 60.
Friday will be the first match between the Cardinal and the Red Storm in the two programs' history.
The winner of the St. John's and Stanford game will play the winner of thirteenth-seeded Columbia and St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday at noon in a second round match.
