QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball program hosted the 10th annual Lou Carnesecca Golf Classic on Monday, which generated more than $375,000 to support the Red Storm both on and off the court. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $5 million for St. John's Basketball.
The annual golf outing was held on Long Island with more than 80 golf participants and several esteemed dinner guests at the day-long event. Following 18 holes of play, all attendees congregated for a cocktail hour and the evening's formal program.
Attendees were welcomed by the event's emcee, FOX Sports and St. John's Basketball analyst Vin Parise, who began by recognizing the event's namesake, Lou Carnesecca, who occupied a prominent seat at the dinner. The 98-year-old former head coach rekindled connections with former players, assistant coaches and colleagues, a group that spans seven decades.
After recognizing new men's basketball coach Rick Pitino and several other distinguished guests, Parise welcomed Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., the 18th President of St. John's University, to offer remarks. A devoted advocate for Red Storm Athletics, Shanley highlighted the importance of the gathering and to remain generous in their support of St. John's Basketball as the program looks to flourish in the BIG EAST and at the national level.
Next to the podium was Pitino who thanked those in attendance for their generosity and support of St. John's Men's Basketball. The Hall of Famer expressed his appreciation for St. John's and for having the opportunity to lead the men's basketball program. Pitino also discussed his excitement for the future of St. John's Basketball. After his remarks at the podium, Pitino answered a range of questions from the event's distinguished guests.
