The 31st overall pick in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft inks a short-term agreement with the main club
QUEENS, N.Y. – Former St. John's men's soccer goalkeeper Luka Gavran has been signed to a short-term agreement by Toronto FC, the team that drafted him 31st overall in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, on Wednesday.
Gavran has made 31 appearances for Toronto FC II over the last two seasons at the MLS NEXT Pro Level. He made his debut on April 3, 2022, against FC Cincinnati II and never looked back, recording six clean sheets in his first year, earning MLS NEXT Pro Goalkeeper of the Month for July 2022 and was selected to participate in "Goalie Wars" at the 2022 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge.
This season, Gavran has logged shutouts in three of his 11 outings and leads the league in total saves with 58.
Gavran shined in his final season with the Johnnies, putting forth a redshirt junior campaign that saw him emerge as one of the nation's top goalkeepers. After splitting time in 2019 and the spring of 2021, the Fall 2021 BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year took over the Red Storm's full-time duties in net and promptly led Division I with 12 shutouts and a .844 save percentage while compiling the third-best goals against average in the nation (0.57).
The Hamilton, Ontario, product became the third Johnnie in program history to earn the conference's top goalkeeper honor before earning All-American nods from both United Soccer Coaches (Third Team) and College Soccer News (Second Team). He played every minute between the pipes that season, leading the Red Storm to an 11-6-3 record, a third-place finish in the BIG EAST regular season and the 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
In 28 appearances during the 2019 and spring 2021 seasons, Gavran played an integral part in 12 combined shutouts alongside 2019 BIG EAST Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and 2021 First Team All-American Jan Hoffelner.
Per MLS rules, the short-term agreement allows clubs to sign players on loan from their MLS NEXT Pro affiliate for MLS, U.S. Open Cup, CONCACAF Champions League, Canadian Championship and exhibition matches. Toronto FC returns to action tonight against the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m.
