Peicheng Chen Wins New York State Open at Bethpage Black Course

Rising junior shot 6-under to take the title on Thursday
BETHPAGE, N.Y.– St. John's men's golfer Peicheng Chen emerged from a competitive field of professional and top amateur players to take the Lenox Advisors/ NFP New York State Open on Thursday evening.
The rising junior shot 6-under, 207, over 54 holes at the Bethpage State Park Black Course, the site of three major championships.
In the opening round, Chen was superb, firing a 4-under, 67, to open the tournament. In the following round, the Beijing, China native went 2-under par, 69, and went into the clubhouse tied for second place, two shots off the lead, after 36 holes.
During Thursday's final round, the All-BIG EAST First Team selection remained steady and carded an even, 71, to slide into first place and win one of the Metropolitan PGA's premier events.
Over the course of the tournament, Chen was stellar on the par-5's shooting 5-under and led the field with 15 birdies.
Chen has been a standout in Queens through his first two seasons with the Red Storm. He has led the squad in lowest stroke average in consecutive years. As a sophomore in 2022-23, Chen took home medalist honors twice at the MacDonald Cup and the Southern Invitational.
This past season, Chen ranked second in the conference with a 71.9 stroke average and led the team with 118 birdies. He was selected to the league's first team and PING All-Northeast Region Team.
