QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball program released the complete 2023-24 non-conference schedule on Thursday. The Red Storm will officially kick off its first season under the direction of Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino on Nov. 7 versus Stony Brook at Carnesecca Arena.
St. John's 11-game, out-of-conference slate includes a mix of local opponents and former conference rivals. The Red Storm makes its season debut at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 13 for a matchup with Michigan. The non-league schedule also features a matchup at West Virginia in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, a contest with Boston College at Barclays Center in the NABC Brooklyn Showcase and three games in the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic.
Prior to its season opener on Nov. 7, St. John's will host Pace in an exhibition on Oct. 29 during the University's Homecoming Weekend. The Johnnies will then welcome local opponent Stony Brook to Queens for the 10th meeting in a series that began in 1999. St. John's defeated the Seawolves, 89-66, in their last meeting on Dec. 6, 2020 at Carnesecca Arena.
The Johnnies return to "The World's Most Famous Arena" on Nov. 13 for a Gavitt Tipoff Games matchup with Michigan. It will mark St. John's seventh appearance in the annual series between the BIG EAST and Big Ten that honors the legacy of college basketball visionary Dave Gavitt. The Red Storm and Wolverines will square off for just the sixth time in a series that dates to 1965. The Johnnies own a 4-1 all-time record against Michigan, including a 97-83 victory in their last meeting on Dec. 3, 2000, in the BB&T Classic in Washington, D.C.
St. John's will then travel to South Carolina for its second appearance in the Charleston Classic. The Johnnies open the tournament with 2023 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) champion North Texas on Nov. 16 at TD Arena. St. John's second matchup will be against Dayton or LSU on Nov. 17. The opposite side of the bracket features Houston, Towson, Wake Forest and Utah, all of which are potential opponents for St. John's in its final game on Nov. 19.
Upon its return from the Palmetto State, St. John's will welcome Holy Cross to Carnesecca Arena on Nov. 25 for the 34th meeting in series history. The Johnnies have won their last eight contests with the Crusaders, including a 65-53 victory on Nov. 21, 2012 in Queens.
The Red Storm will travel to Morgantown on Dec. 1 to take on West Virginia in the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. St. John's has won the last three meetings with its former BIG EAST rival. The programs previously met in the 2019 edition of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, as St. John's edged the Mountaineers, 70-68, at Madison Square Garden.
St. John's will close out the non-conference slate with four games in four local venues, beginning with Sacred Heart at Carnesecca Arena on Dec. 6. Then on Dec. 10, The Red Storm will square off with Boston College for the 74th time in series history inside Barclays Center. The Johnnies most recent meeting with the Eagles was on Nov. 30, 2020, as St. John's edged Boston College, 97-93, at Mohegan Sun Arena. It will also mark St. John's 11th appearance inside Barclays Center, logging an 8-2 mark in Brooklyn since the building's debut in 2012.
The Johnnies will return to MSG on Dec. 16 for a showdown with Fordham. It is the first meeting between St. John's and the Rams at The Garden since Dec. 14, 2014, a 74-53 Red Storm triumph in the MSG Holiday Festival.
St. John's will wrap up the non-conference portion of its schedule on Dec. 30 at UBS Arena against Hofstra. The Johnnies own a 22-5 all-time record against the Pride, including a 72-60 victory in their last meeting on Dec. 20, 2009.
