Red Storm to face two 2024 NCAA Tournament teams in 15-game slate
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Lacrosse Head Coach Justin Turri unveiled the program's 15-game schedule for the 2025 season on Friday.
The Johnnies, coming off their most successful season since 2019, will play seven games at home in Queens and eight road contests. All seven home games will take place at Belson Stadium for the first time in program history. The Red Storm will face two opponents for the first time in 2025 and five teams for at least the 25th time. Six opponents in 2025 finished last season in the top 30 of the RPI.
"I am thankful to have once again assembled a slate that will challenge us from the beginning of spring through the end of BIG EAST play," said Turri, set to begin his third season at the helm in Queens. "Our non-conference schedule will continue some standing rivalries and renew others while preparing us for the gauntlet of the BIG EAST."
The Johnnies won four games a season ago, including a 13-9 triumph over Marquette on March 30 for its first BIG EAST victory in eight years. Coach Turri returns 75% of its total scoring from a season ago for 2025, including All-BIG EAST selections Brian Kelly and Bobby Seel, who each surpassed 40 points last spring. The team also brought in 22 new faces, comprised of 17 freshmen and five transfers.
After kicking off 2025 with a 1 p.m. scrimmage at Brown on Saturday, Feb. 1, the regular season will begin seven days later on Feb. 8 in Newark N.J., against NJIT. The Red Storm began its 2024 campaign against the Highlanders in Queens and jumped out to an early 4-0 advantage before ultimately falling, 10-8. Faceoff in the season-opener is set for noon.
The following weekend, the Johnnies will head to Newark, Del., for a 12 p.m. clash with the University of Delaware on Feb. 15. This will be the third straight year the two programs have met, with the Blue Hens winning each of the previous two meetings. In 2024, Delaware finished 9-5 overall and 6-1 in CAA play, advancing to the CAA title game, falling to top-seeded Towson, 15-6.
St. John's will play its first match of the season at Belson when it welcomes Quinnipiac for a midweek tilt on Tuesday, Feb. 18, kicking off a season-long four-game homestand. The Bobcats started 2024 7-0 before dropping five of its last seven contests. Faceoff in the second all-time meeting between the two programs is set for 3 p.m.
The Johnnies will play their third game in seven days on Saturday, Feb. 22, renewing its longstanding rivalry with Hofstra. The 27th all-time meeting between the two programs will begin at 1 p.m., marking the 16th straight season the local foes will square off.
On Friday, Feb. 28, St. John's will close out the month of February by welcoming Jacksonville to Queens for a 3 p.m. contest before wrapping up the homestand with a 4 p.m. clash with Fairfield on Tuesday, March 4 at Belson Stadium.
Four days later, the Red Storm will be in Smithfield, R.I., for its first-ever matchup against Bryant on Feb. 26. The Bulldogs won nine games a season ago, highlighted by a 12-6 victory over then-No. 15 Boston University on Feb. 16, 2024. The following Tuesday, March 11, the Johnnies will head to Piscataway, N.J., to square off with Rutgers. This will be the 31st all-time meeting between St. John's and the Scarlet Knights, the most the Red Storm has faced a single opponent in program history.
Back at Belson Stadium on March 15, the Johnnies will face Mercer for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Mercer went 4-10 in 2024, picking up a triple-overtime victory over Queens, whom St. John's took down in February for its first win of the season. Faceoff between the Bears and the Red Storm is set for 12 p.m.
In its final non-conference game of the season, St. John's will trek to Ridgefield High School in Ridgefield, Conn., to battle Hobart in a neutral site contest beginning at noon. When the two programs last met on April 17, 2009, the Minutemen squeaked out a 10-9 win at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens.
BIG EAST play will start on March 29 in Milwaukee, Wis., against Marquette. In the Johnnies' 13-9 victory over the Golden Eagles last spring, the Red Storm rallied from an early 5-0 deficit behind four goals from Kelly and a hat trick from Caiden Vlasimsky. Goaltender Kyle Munson made 13 saves between the pipes in the win.
The following week, St. John's will return to Queens on April 5 to host Denver for a 12 p.m. start at Belson. The Pioneers advanced to the national semifinals last spring before falling to eventual national champion Notre Dame.
On April 12, the Red Storm will head down I-95 for a noon tilt against Villanova at Villanova Stadium. In last season's matchup between the two squads, the Wildcats walked away with a 14-9 win. Current junior Jake Wright tallied a hat trick for St. John's in the loss.
Six-time defending BIG EAST champions Georgetown comes to Belson Stadium on April 19 for the Red Storm's final home game of the season, set to begin at 12 p.m. The Hoyas entered the NCAA Tournament last season as the No. 8 seed, taking down Penn State in the first round before losing to Notre Dame in the quarterfinals. When the Johnnies faced the Hoyas last season, Seel racked up a career-high four assists.
St. John's will wrap up the regular season on Friday, April 25, against Providence at 7 p.m., marking the Red Storm's third road trip of 2025 to The Ocean State. The Friars return their top two scorers, Ryan Bell (66 points) and Richie Joseph (41 goals), from last year's squad that finished 7-8 and fell in overtime to Georgetown in the BIG EAST semifinals.
The 2024 BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP will be at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver from May 1-3. The top four finishers in the conference will qualify.
"We look forward to seeing all Johnnie faithful and program supporters this spring at Belson Stadium and at our stops across the country," said Turri.
