QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball program's average attendance for home games reached the highest mark in over two decades this past season. The Red Storm averaged 10,183 fans per contest over its 16 home games in 2023-24.
Under the direction of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coach Rick Pitino, St. John's finished the regular season with a 12-4 mark at home, which includes seven BIG EAST victories. The Red Storm's average attendance figure this season was the highest since welcoming 11,223 fans per contest in 2000-01, one season following St. John's last BIG EAST Tournament championship.
"A huge thank you to all of our fans and alumni across the country in making this a special season to remember in New York City with Coach Pitino," said Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "The future is bright as we continue to improve our campus arena, so I encourage fans to plan for 2024-25 as we have seen a large increase in season ticket members this past year. Let's have a great month cheering for the Johnnies together in March Madness."
In 2023-24, St. John's sold out all five of its regular season games at Carnesecca Arena, as well as the Red Storm's contest with Connecticut on Feb. 3 at Madison Square Garden. It was the first sellout for St. John's at "The World's Most Famous Arena" since welcoming a capacity crowd to MSG for the Johnnies matchup with Villanova on Feb. 17, 2019.
St. John's averaged 13,977 fans in its eight games at The Garden, which was the most since welcoming 16,498 per game during the 2018-19 season. Additionally, the Johnnies averaged 11,173 fans per contest in BIG EAST home games. In total, the Red Storm welcomed 162,928 fans for its 16 games at MSG, Carnesecca Arena and UBS Arena.
The Johnnies enter the postseason with a 19-12 overall record and finished with an 11-9 mark in BIG EAST play. St. John's 11 conference victories were the most since posting 12 during the 2010-11 campaign. The Red Storm secured fifth place in the league standings and enter its BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal matchup riding a five-game win streak. No. 5 St. John's will square off with No. 4 Seton Hall on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. on FS1.
