St. John’s Returns Home for Midweek Matchup against Columbia

Red Storm has won three straight against the Lions
QUEENS, N.Y. (April 15, 2024) – Looking to get back in the win column, the St. John's baseball team (23-7-1) will welcome Ivy League foe Columbia (15-16) to Jack Kaiser Stadium on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. in Queens.
Tuesday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.

Making its first trip back to Queens in over two weeks, the Red Storm rides a four-game unbeaten streak over teams outside the BIG EAST and a 19-5-1 mark against such opponents. The Johnnies also boast an unbeaten 14-0-1 mark at home, the fourth-longest stretch to open a season in program history, trailing only the 1962 and 1981 teams with 16.
St. John's is currently slashing .347/.460/.560 as a team, averaging 10.6 runs on 11.6 hits per game in Queens. The Red Storm pitching staff has also posted a 3.30 ERA and held the opposition to a .224 batting average against.
Outfielder Jackson Tucker enters the midweek slate having reached base safely in 20 consecutive contests. The Red Storm's center fielder is also on a 14-game hitting streak, matching Blake Mayberry for the longest this season. Since starting his hitting stretch on March 19 against Manhattan, Tucker is slashing .383/.466/.583 with 18 runs scored and 18 RBIs, both of which lead the team over that span. Tucker has also logged six multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games during his stretch. The Staten Island native has added 10 stolen bases in 11 opportunities.
The Johnnies are among the nation's top offensive teams with a .310 batting average (24th), 15 triples (13th) and 81 doubles (19th). St. John's is also ranked 17th in the country with a .758 winning percentage.
St. John's and Columbia will meet for the 45th time since their inaugural matchup in 1974. The Red Storm has won each of its last three showdowns with the Lions, including a 7-5 victory on May 2, 2023. Marty Higgins registered a 3-for-4 showing at the dish with three RBIs and a home run in the win last season. The tandem of Ben Adams and Chuck Sanzio tossed back-to-back scoreless frames to end the game.
Columbia has won 10 of its last 12 games despite dropping its recent weekend series to Yale at home, moving to 15-14 on the season and 9-3 in Ivy League play. Since March 17, the Lions have not lost a game by more than three runs, keeping pace with its opposition over the last 16 contests.
Longtime Head Coach Brett Boretti has turned to senior Jack Cooper as a catalyst for his offense and he has shown up in 2024. Leading the Ivy League with 42 RBIs, the infielder has belted the second-most home runs (12) in the conference. He is also hitting .322 on the year, trailing only teammate Cole Hage (.358) for the team's high mark.
The Lions pace the Ivy League with 8.4 runs per game (31st in NCAA), 54 homers (46th) and a .288 batting average this season. With its high-powered offense, Columbia has struggled on the mound with an 8.35 ERA while the opposition is hitting .292.
