O’Leary named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Fitzsimmons makes Weekly Honor Roll
NEW YORK – For the eighth consecutive week, the St. John's baseball team was represented on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll as Liam O'Leary was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week and Dylan Fitzsimmons appeared on the honor roll, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
This marks the fifth straight week that a pair of Johnnies have landed on the honor roll. O'Leary picked up his second pitcher of the week honor and his fifth weekly award, while Fitzsimmons was recognized for the first time this season.
Making his 13th start of the year, O'Leary turned in another dominant outing, tossing his third complete game of the season in St. John's 8-1 win over Villanova. The junior allowed just one run on four hits across 9.0 innings, striking out eight batters while throwing 114 pitches against 33 batters. His performance helped the Red Storm clinch a berth in the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament while remaining firmly in contention for the conference regular-season crown.
O'Leary has been one of the conference's top arms throughout the 2026 campaign, posting a 2.69 ERA that ranks second in the BIG EAST and among the top 50 nationally. The right hander is the only pitcher in the conference with three complete games this season, a total that ranks third in NCAA Division I.
The Souderton, Pa., native is tied for the league lead with seven victories and 13 starts while pacing the BIG EAST with a 1.09 WHIP across 87.0 innings pitched. He also ranks second in the conference in walks allowed per nine innings (2.17). O'Leary has recorded at least three or more strikeouts in nine of his starts this season. He has collected five wins in his last six BIG EAST outings without suffering a loss.
Fitzsimmons had a breakout week, starting all four contests and helping power St. John's to its sixth consecutive conference series victory over Villanova. The freshman slashed .313/.353/.563, going 5-for-16 with his fourth home run of the year, a double, four RBIs, two runs scored, a walk and two stolen bases.
In the series opener against the Wildcats on May 8, Fitzsimmons finished 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base in the Red Storm's 8-1 victory. He followed that performance with a clutch effort in the second game of the series on May 9, going 2-for-4 with a home run and all three RBIs in a 3-0 shutout win. His go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning gave the Johnnies the lead before his two-run homer in the ninth provided insurance for the 3-0 win and series victory while punching St. John's ticket to the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament. Fitzsimmons currently leads all BIG EAST freshmen with 11 doubles this season.
O'Leary, Fitzsimmons and the Red Storm will host Butler for the final series of the regular season, starting on Thursday at Jack Kaiser Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
