Red Storm adds 7-foot-1 center to the 2024-25 men’s basketball roster
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 20-win season with its most BIG EAST victories in 14 years, the St. John's men's basketball program has added USC transfer Vincent Iwuchukwu (EE-woo-CHEWK-woo) who is set to join the Red Storm for the 2024-25 campaign.
"After putting Vince Iwuchukwu through a player development session, I knew we had to have him in a Johnnies uniform," said St. John's Head Coach Rick Pitino. "Awesome attitude and work ethic. [Vince is] agile, mobile and shoots the heck out of it. Excited to have him [join our program] with so much upside and potential."
Iwuchukwu makes his way to Queens following two seasons at the University of Southern California. The 7-foot-1 center averaged 5.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in 45 appearances during his time with the Trojans. Iwuchukwu also shot 50.6 percent from the field over his career at USC.
The San Antonio native appeared in 31 games, making 11 starts last season. Iwuchukwu averaged 5.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2023-24. He recorded double figures in five contests last season and logged one double-double. Iwuchukwu recorded a season-high 15 points shooting 7-for-8 from the field against Long Beach State on Dec. 10. Just over a month later, he put forth a 14-point, 12-rebound performance against Arizona State on Jan. 20.
Iwuchukwu played in 14 games during his freshman campaign in 2022-23. He averaged 5.4 points and 2.5 rebounds despite missing significant time due to health reasons. Iwuchukwu scored a career-high 19 points in just his third career start against Oregon State on Feb. 11, 2023, knocking down all nine of his free throws and pulling down seven rebounds.
Prior to USC, Iwuchukwu was rated as the No. 16 overall recruit in the Class of 2022 according to Rivals.com. He helped lead Southern California Academy to a 24-4 overall record and a No. 10 national ranking by the end of the season as a senior. The Red Storm's newest addition also played in the 2022 Jordan Brand Classic for Team Air, registering 16 points, eight rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocks in a 118-109 win over Team Flight.
The former five-star standout also starred on the Nike EYBL circuit playing for Drive Nation and averaged 19.3 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in 2021. An established winner, Iwuchukwu also helped Cole High School in San Antonio to a 2020 UIL 3A State Championship.
