St. John's secured its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Manhattan. Seniors Macoumba Ba and Miguel Diaz each scored a goal while logging a full 90 minutes of action in Thursday's contest. Diaz found the back of the net for the second-straight game with his strike in the 58th minute. Sophomore midfielder Camron Boumsong registered his first collegiate point with an assist on Diaz's tally.
Ba, who was named to the 2024 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, paces the conference with a 71.4 percent shooting accuracy this season, good for 48th in the nation. Diaz is also one of 11 BIG EAST players to score at least two goals through the early going.
Red Storm Head Coach Dr. David Masur earned his 398th victory in Queens on Thursday, looking to become just the seventh men's soccer coach in NCAA history to reach the 400-win plateau with a singular Division I program. St. John's is also creeping up on 500 triumphs as a program, sitting with 497 victories entering Sunday's contest.
The Johnnies and Great Danes will square off for the second time in program history. The Red Storm emerged victorious in its lone meeting with UAlbany, shutting out the opposition, 3-0, on Aug. 30, 2021. St. John's saw a career effort from Brandon Knapp, who scored a goal and logged a pair of helpers in his second four-point outing with the Johnnies. Lucas Bartlett and Wesley Leggett also registered a tally in the contest, while Luka Gavran posted his first career solo clean sheet after combining for 12 shutouts in his first two seasons.
UAlbany (1-2-0) enters Sunday's contest on the heels of a heartbreaking 2-1 setback to fellow BIG EAST rival No. 20 Seton Hall. Ivar Orri Gissurarson registered the team's lone tally before a late penalty kick goal from the Pirates' Jon Vignir Pétursson sealed the match in the 89th minute.
The Great Danes are ranked 24th in the nation in shot accuracy, producing 58.1 percent of their shots on target. Goalkeeper Daniel Shannon has had to make key stops for UAlbany this season, pushing away 14 shots, good for ninth in NCAA Division I.
UAlbany picked up one win this season, taking its season opener against Niagara, 3-2. An 89th-minute own goal put the Great Danes ahead after Pedro Lucas and Timo Jansen registered a strike earlier in the match.
Following Sunday's contest, the Johnnies will hit the road and take on No. 17 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Friday, Sept. 6. The Red Storm will battle the Tar Heels for the third time in program history, marking the first meeting since 2003.
