Erin Jones was named to the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team
San Diego – The St. John's volleyball team was swept by No. 16 Arizona State, 3-0, in its final match of the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic on Sunday afternoon inside Jenny Craig Pavilion. The scores of the sets were 20-25, 7-25 and 24-26.
Erin Jones was named to the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the match.
Throughout the invitational, Jones racked up a team-high 50 kills at 3.85 per set with 30 digs, eight total blocks and six service aces.
Against Arizona State, Jones led St. John's (4-2) with 10 kills to go along with seven digs and two block assists.
Rashanny Solano Smith led the match with 16 digs. Wiktoria Kowalczyk posted 28 assists, two rejections, two digs, an ace and a kill.
Giorgia Walther added seven kills to the Red Storm's total while Ludovica Zola, Magda Stambrowska and Lucrezia Lodi all tallied four slams. Stambrowska registered three swats in the match while Zola tacked on another two blocks.
Lodi posted a set-high four kills while Solano Smith contributed six digs for the Johnnies in set one. The two teams went back and forth at the start of the first stanza, leading to a 6-6 tie. Arizona State (6-0) rang up three straight points on a kill, a block and a Red Storm error to lead, 9-6. The Sun Devils kept their foot on the gas, growing their advantage to seven, 16-9 and forcing a St. John's timeout. Down 18-11, the Johnnies erupted for a 7-1 run that featured four Lodi kills that cut the deficit down to one, 19-18. Arizona State was unbothered, putting together a 6-2 stretch that ended the first frame, 25-20, in its favor.
Solano Smith continued her backline prowess in the second frame with a set-high five digs. The second game was all Sun Devils as they ran out to an opening 9-5 lead. Arizona State continued to pour on points, registering seven unanswered that grew its lead to 11, 16-5. The Sun Devils continued to command the rest of the set with a 9-2 run, leading them to a 25-7 second set victory.
Jones put up five slams in the third and final game of the match. Arizona State opened the third set with a 7-1 edge, causing the Johnnies to burn a timeout early. St. John's responded with a 10-4 spurt powered by six kills between five players to only trail by one, 12-11. The Sun Devils grew their lead back to four, 19-15, but the Red Storm was able to cut it back down to one late, 22-21, and force an Arizona State timeout. St. John's continued firing out of the stoppage, using a block and a Kowalczyk ace to lead the set, 23-22. The Sun Devils fought back, answering a Red Storm set point followed by a Claire Jeter kill and block to take the final stanza, 26-24.
St. John's will return home on Tuesday, Sept. 10, when it takes on NJIT inside Carnesecca Arena. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Queens.
