Amling, Groves and Vinas set to lead the Red Storm this year
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team has tabbed Max Amling, Adam Groves and Ignacio Vinas as team captains for the 2025 spring season, set to begin on Friday.
All three athletes received the honor for the first time in a St. John's uniform, marking the first time in his seven-year tenure that Head Coach Dillon Pottish has bestowed the distinction.
"Adam, Max, and Ignacio exemplify what a St. John's Men's Tennis player represents," said Pottish. "I'm looking forward to these 3 young men leading the team to a great year."
Groves enters his third year in Queens in 2025, coming off a strong sophomore campaign last spring. The Billericay, England native excelled in doubles play, finishing the season with an 11-3 record. The junior, alongside season-long doubles partner Ryota Kaneda was named BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week on back-to-back weeks. The week of April 1, the duo went 2-0, including picking up a crucial doubles point in the Red Storm's victory over then-No. 75 Monmouth. The following week, Groves and Kaneda earned three wins, bringing their winning streak to seven. Groves also went 2-0 in singles action a season ago.
Vinas earns the captain nod in his second year at St. John's. Last season, the Oral Roberts transfer earned two BIG EAST weekly awards and finished 2024 with 13 combined victories. The senior was named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week on April 1 after winning a pair of singles matches, including the five-set clincher against Monmouth. Vinas was also tabbed to the Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 5 following a pair of impressive performances against Rider and Dartmouth.
Amling is named a captain in just his first season in Queens. After three seasons at Lamar, Amling comes to St. John's as the 2023 Southland Conference Player of the Year and a three-time all-conference selection. The Neustadt, Germany native finished 2024 with six straight singles victories, all on the No. 2 court.
The Johnnies, coming off their fifth-straight appearance in the BIG EAST Tournament title match, will open the 2025 season with a pair of matches this weekend against Binghamton on Friday and Niagara on Saturday. Both matches will be at the Lane-Starke Center in Binghamton, N.Y.
