The Red Storm earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history and enter the matchup following their fourth BIG EAST Championship in the past seven seasons under Head Coach Dillon Pottish. Pottish and his staff were also named BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for the fourth time since 2019.
St. John's swept the conference postseason awards, with Radomir Tomic earning BIG EAST Player of the Year honors and David Petrovic being named Freshman of the Year. The Red Storm also placed three student-athletes on All-BIG EAST teams, as Tomic and Semen Agynskyy were selected to the First Team, while Petrovic earned Second Team recognition.
This marks the fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in Charlottesville for St. John's, with previous trips in 2015, 2019, and 2025.
Columbia enters Friday's match with a 16-7 overall record and a 6-1 Ivy League mark, earning a share of the Ivy League regular season title. The Lions are coming off a strong 2025 NCAA Tournament run that saw them reach the quarterfinals before falling to eventual national champion Wake Forest.
Friday's matchup will be the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Columbia holding an 8-2 advantage in the series. Despite two previous neutral-site meetings, this will mark the first NCAA Tournament meeting between the programs.
The winner of Friday's first-round contest will advance to Saturday's Round of 32 to face either Virginia or Rider. Saturday's match is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Boar's Head Resort.
