Volleyball Falls to No. 13 Creighton on the Road, 3-0

The Red Storm are back in action next weekend at Xavier and Butler
OMAHA, Neb. – The St. John's volleyball team (6-15, 2-6 BIG EAST) began its three-match road swing with a loss at No. 13 Creighton (14-5, 7-0 BIG EAST) on Friday evening, 3-0. The Johnnies managed to push the second set to extra points in the second set but ultimately came up short. The scores of the sets were 12-25, 24-26 and 15-25.
Erin Jones led the Red Storm with eight kills, while Martina Capponcelli paced the offense with 17 assists. On the defensive side of the net, Rashanny Solano Smith notched a team-high 13 digs.
In the first frame, Creighton jumped out to 7-2 lead, but St. John's chipped into the lead behind several attacking errors from the Bluejays. The hosts' offense continued to roll, building the lead throughout the frame. In the end, the Bluejays held on to their lead and took the first set, 25-12.
Set two saw an early 5-0 Creighton run, forcing the Johnnies to take their first timeout. As each team settled into their offense, the Red Storm rallied and cut it three at 12-9. A pair of kills from Jones cut the advantage to one, causing the home team to take a timeout at 13-12. After the stoppage, Chloe Bell fired a kill to knot the score at 15 apiece. As the set progressed, Creighton extended its lead back to three at 21-18. St. John's refused to back down and tied the set again at 24-24, but the Bluejays prevailed, 26-24.
The Red Storm used a quick 4-1 run to take the lead in the early going, highlighted by a Jones/Harris rejection. Creighton came back and erased the deficit, as the visitors took their first timeout of the stanza, 9-6. After the stoppage the Bluejays applied offensive pressure, resulting in the lead bubbling to five at 14-9. Creighton used several runs to pull away and took the final stanza to close out the match, 25-15.
St. John's turns its attention to a pair of road matches next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 23, the Red Storm will face off against Xavier in the Cintas Center for a 5 p.m. match. The following day, the team will make their day to Hinckle Fieldhouse and take on Butler at 4 p.m.
