Red Storm outshot the Pirates, 11-5
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team (7-5-3, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) fell on Saturday to RV Seton Hall (7-2-6, 3-0-3 BIG EAST) at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium, 1-0.
The Red Storm more than doubled up the Pirates in the shot category, 11-5, but the Seton Hall goal in the first half proved to be the difference maker. Mikkel Lejbowicz recorded the game-winning goal on assists from Agustin Resch and Axel Berglund.
Guilherme Gomes, Andrew Porucznik and Gabin Thomelier paced the Johnnies with two shots apiece. Alec McLachlan made four saves in Queens.
In the early going, both sides battled in the midfield as the teams only produced two combined shots in the opening 30 minutes.
In the 32nd minute, Alex Berglund played in a ball to the outside of the Red Storm box. Augustin Resch volleyed the incoming pass out of the air crossing it to the feet of Mikkel Lejbowicz, who gave the visitors an advantage off a right-footed volley.
The Red Storm went to the locker room trailing by a goal and led in the shot category, 4-2.
In the latter 45 minutes, St. John's came out with a flurry of chances recording a pair of shots in the first two minutes of the second half. Gabin Thomelier delivered an attempt after getting free that was blocked by a Seton Hall defender. On the ensuing possession, Bjorn Nikolajewski played a cross into the box as Gomes connected but the attempt went high over the crossbar in the 47th minute.
The Pirates looked to double their lead as Konstantin Donalies steered one on frame that McLachlan got a hand on batting it into the crossbar in the 65th minute. It was the senior coming up big once again to keep the deficit at one goal in the 69th minute.
In the final 20 minutes the Red Storm continued to search for the equalizer as Thomelier and Jeremy Sharp logged shot attempts but the Pirates held on for the road victory.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Nov. 1 when it heads to Villanova for a 12 p.m. contest at the Higgins Soccer Complex.
