Freshman scored twice in Friday night draw against Butler
QUEENS, N.Y. – After recording his second multi-goal effort of the season on Friday night against Butler, Guilherme Gomes has been named to the final BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the season, it was announced this afternoon by the league office.
The freshman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, scored both of the Red Storm's goals in a 2-2 draw against the Bulldogs at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Gomes opened the scoring in the 25th minute, heading home a beautifully placed ball by Gabin Thomelier on the back post to give St. John's an early lead. Jeremy Sharp also assisted on the goal.
Following two consecutive goals from Butler to put the Bulldogs in front, Gomes buried a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to tie the game at two. The goal proved even more pivotal, as Red Storm defender Bjorn Nikolajewski had been shown a red card just seven minutes earlier.
Gomes' brace provided yet another highlight in an already stellar freshman season. Gomes earned national player of the week honors from TopDrawerSoccer on Sept. 2 after finding the back of the net four times in a 5-0 drubbing of New Hampshire in Queens on Aug. 28. Gomes became the first Johnnie since St. John's Hall of Famer Fred Bischoff on Oct. 23, 1982, to score four or more goals in a single game.
In addition to his standout performances against Butler and New Hampshire, Gomes also scored a pair of game winners in victories over Providence (Oct. 11) and Monmouth (Oct. 21).
Entering postseason play, Gomes' eight goals are tied for fourth in the BIG EAST overall and fourth nationally among all freshmen.
Gomes also tallied two assists on the season, picking up a pair of helpers in a 3-1 road win over Villanova on Nov. 1. Gomes was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for his efforts.
Gomes and the Red Storm will learn their NCAA Tournament fate a week from today with the airing of the NCAA Men's Soccer Selection Show.
