St. John’s Falls to RV/NR Denver, 15-9

The Red Storm will be back in action on April 18 against No. 13/12 Georgetown
DENVER – The St. John's lacrosse team (2-10, 0-3 BIG EAST) fell to RV/NR Denver (5-6, 1-2 BIG EAST), 15-9, on Saturday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Matt Nelson recorded 12 saves, marking his 11th game this season with double-digit stops.
Noah Plenn led the Red Storm offensively with three goals on four shots on target. Wade Bryan added a pair of goals, while Jack McCormack found the back of the net for his second tally of the season. Jake Wright and Chase Huggard each contributed a point in the contest.
Denver struck first, scoring the game's opening two goals within the first few minutes of play. Bryan answered shortly after with a coast-to-coast effort, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with 11:52 remaining in the quarter. The Pioneers responded with three consecutive goals to extend their lead to 5-1 at the 7:18 mark. Following a four-minute scoreless stretch, Plenn found the back of the net from in front to trim the deficit to three, sending St. John's into the second frame trailing 5-2.
Both teams were held scoreless through the opening three minutes of the second frame before McCormack caused a turnover on a Denver clear, setting up the Johnnies' first goal of the quarter. The Pioneers responded with three straight tallies to take an 8-3 lead with 7:45 remaining.
One minute later, Plenn recorded his second goal of the day, finishing from a tough angle to cut the deficit to four. St. John's continued to build momentum as Rogers found the back of the net to make it 8-5. Bryan followed with his second goal of the contest, racing past the defense on a full-field sprint to trim the margin to two. Denver answered with a late goal, taking a 9-6 advantage into halftime.
The Pioneers opened the second half with a pair of goals in the first four minutes, extending its lead to five. Both teams were then held scoreless for the next five minutes despite chances on each side. Rogers broke the drought with his second goal of the day, cutting the deficit to 11-7 with 6:38 remaining in the quarter.
Nelson followed with a pair of clutch saves from point-blank range to keep St. John's within striking distance. Moments later, Plenn completed the hat trick with a long-range finish, bringing the Red Storm within three heading into the final stanza.
In a defensive fourth quarter, St. John's earned the opening possession and generated several quality chances that narrowly missed. Denver capitalized soon after, scoring a pair of quick goals to extend its lead to five with 9:37 remaining.
Both teams then traded empty possessions as the defenses stood firm, with Nelson recording two more key saves to keep the Red Storm within reach.
