SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's volleyball team (10-19, 6-10 BIG EAST) ended the 2025 season with a victory at Seton Hall (6-21, 0-16 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon in Walsh Gymnasium. Martina Ghezzi recorded a career-high 20 kills on an outstanding .410 hitting percentage. The set scores were 22-25, 27-25, 25-19 and 25-20.
"This was an amazing win on a regional broadcast and shows that the future is bright for Red Storm volleyball," said Head Coach Joanne Persico.
Ghezzi led the Red Storm in kills, with Ella Parker finishing with 12 kills. Erin Jones capped her illustrious Red Storm career by pacing the Johnnies with 48 assists. Rashanny Solano Smith anchored the defense with a team-high 24 digs, while Kya Harrisblocked three total shots.
To start the match, St. John's jumped out to an early 8-4 lead, courtesy of three Chloe Bell kills. The Pirates slowly clawed their way back and tied the set at 12-12. After a pair of successful coaches' challenges, the hosts jumped out to a 15-13 advantage. The Red Storm came back to erase the deficit at 21-21, but the Pirates prevailed and took the opening frame 25-22.
Set two saw 14 tied scores throughout. The hosts took an early 6-3 lead and forced St. John's to take a timeout. The Johnnies rallied and were able to cut into the lead 10-9. Later in the set, the visitors once again were able to cut the lead to one at 18-17. Playing to a 23-23 deadlock, the Johnnies were the first to trigger set point. The Pirates were able to stave off set point, and service errors by both teams saw a 25-25 tie. The Johnnies were able to rattle off two consecutive points to take the set 27-25 and level the match at one set apiece.
The third stanza continued the tightly contested match theme, with neither team allowing more than a two-point lead to 10-10. After a media timeout, St. John's used a 3-1 run to gain its largest advantage of the set, 18-14. Later in the stanza, the visitors pushed the lead to as many as five at 24-19, and a Ghezzi shot down the near sideline settled the stanza at 25-19 and gave St. John's a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth game, the Johnnies continued to ride the momentum from the previous set and jumped out to a 10-5 lead. The five-point edge held up through the middle portion of the game, all the way to a Seton Hall timeout at 20-15. After triggering set point, Ghezzi put the match to rest with her 20th kill of the contest.
The St. John's volleyball team finished the 2025 season with a 10-19 overall record and a 6-10 BIG EAST record. In the last six matches, the Johnnies came out on top in four of them.
