RJ Luis Jr. Named to Naismith Player of the Year Midseason Team

The Naismith Trophy is presented to the top player in college basketball
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's men's basketball standout RJ Luis Jr. was named to the Jersey Mike's Naismith Player of the Year Midseason Team, as announced Friday.

Luis was one of 30 players named to the list from across the country and one of only five BIG EAST players. The Naismith Trophy is annually awarded to the top men's and women's players in college basketball.

The Miami native has made a major jump in his second year in Queens, leading the team averaging 17.4 points per game, which ranks fourth in the BIG EAST. Luis native has tallied seven 20-plus point scoring performances and has finished in double-digits in 24 of his 25 contests. The wing is shooting 44.9 percent from the floor and 74.2 percent from the charity stripe.

Luis has also made an impact on the glass, ranking sixth in the BIG EAST in rebounding with 6.9 boards per game. He has tallied seven double-doubles this season, which ranks second in the league. Over his last seven games, the 6-foot-7 wing has pulled down 8.0 rebounds per contest.

No. 9/8 St. John's will be back in action on Sunday when it welcomes No 24/21 Creighton to Madison Square Garden for a 3 p.m. contest on FS1.
