Luis becomes the first St. John’s player to be named USBWA All-American since Malik Sealy in 1992
QUEENS, N.Y. – RJ Luis Jr. was tabbed U.S. Basketball Writers' Association (USBWA) Second Team All-America, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Luis becomes the first St. John's player since Malik Sealy in 1992 to be named a USBWA All-American. The USBWA has annually honored an All-American team since the 1956-57 season.
Luis was named to his fourth major All-America list after earning Second Team AP and NABC honors earlier this week. The junior was selected Sporting News Third Team All-America last week, having helped lead the Johnnies to a 30-4 overall record and a BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Championship.
Luis has averaged 18.4 points per game in 31.7 minutes of action this season. The wing logged 13 20-plus point outings in 33 appearances, most recently posting a 29-point performance, that included 27 second half points, as the Red Storm overwhelmed Creighton in the latter stanza of the championship game to capture its first BIG EAST Tournament crown since 2000. Luis was presented with the Dave Gavitt Trophy as the BIG EAST Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
Luis became the first St. John's player since Walter Berry in 1986 to be named BIG EAST Player of the Year. The Miami native ranks first in the league with 10 double-doubles on the season and is averaging 7.2 rebounds per game, which ranks fifth in the conference.
No. 2 St. John's (30-4) will face No. 15 Omaha (22-12) in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Thursday at 9:45 p.m. in Providence, R.I. on CBS.
