NEW YORK, N.Y. – After winning a pair of matches this past weekend in conference play against DePaul and Marquette, Noemi Babikova of the St. John's women's tennis team was tabbed BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
This is the season's third weekly award for the St. John's women's tennis team and the second for Babikova. The sophomore and Alicia Gomez garnered BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week last Monday, while Sandra Dzhambazov and Nicoline Sartz Lunde previously earned Doubles Team of the Week honors on March 3.
Babikova earned singles victories on the No. 2 court in each of the Red Storm's triumphs on the road this weekend. In the squad's 4-3 triumph over DePaul on Friday in Chicago, Babkova earned a gritty come-from-behind win over Saha Stula, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, earning the tiebreaking and match-clinching fourth point for St. John's. In the team's convincing 6-1 performance against the Golden Eagles on Sunday, the Boldog, Slovakia product took down Andie Weise in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The second-year Johnnie is 5-1 in solo play this season and 5-0 at the No. 2 singles position.
The Red Storm has won four straight matches and sits at 11-4 overall and 4-0 in BIG EAST play with just four matches remaining before the BIG EAST Tournament.
St. John's will look to make it five in a row when it travels to the Bronx on Saturday to face Fordham. First serve from the Hawthorn-Rooney Tennis Courts is set for 12 p.m.
