Kathy Meehan to be Honored as BIG EAST Legend at 2025 Women’s Basketball Tournament

Meehan will be recognized for her accomplishments during Saturday’s Quarterfinal Round at Mohegan Sun Arena
NEW YORK – Longtime administrator and St. John's women's basketball alumnus Kathy Meehan will be honored at the 2025 Women's Basketball Tournament as a BIG EAST Legend, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
Meehan, along with 10 other selected individuals from each of the conference's member schools will be recognized as part of the BIG EAST Legend Recognition Program during Saturday's quarterfinal matchup between top-seeded UConn and the winner of eighth-seeded St. John's and ninth-seeded Butler at 12 p.m. inside Mohegan Sun Arena. The BIG EAST Recognition Program was launched in 2024 by the league to honor men's and women's basketball alumni, who paved the way and established the rich history of BIG EAST basketball.
As St. John's women's basketball celebrates its 50th anniversary season, there are few individuals that have more of an impact on the program throughout its history than Meehan, who played on the first-ever varisty team in 1974-75. Meehan retired in July 2023 after dedicating nearly five decades of service in many capacities in Queens. A double alumna of St. John's, after her tenure as a student-athlete she went on to make a profound impact in the advancement of women's athletics at the university and on the national scale. Meehan spearhead the introduction of several women's sports team at St. John's and played a pivotal role in the evolution of the BIG EAST Conference.
After starting her time as a student-athlete, Meehan began her long and decorated career after being hired by the late Jack Kaiser as Assistant Director for Women's Athletics, Women's Intramural Director and Women's Basketball Assistant Coach. She went onto hold many roles for the department including- Women's Athletic Director, Senior Associate Athletic Director, Associate Vice President for Athletics and Senior Deputy Athletics Director. The Long Island native also took on the role of Interim Athletic Director three times during her tenue.
Beyond her contributions at St. John's, Meehan served on numerous national committees. Most notably the NCAA's Women's Basketball and Volleyball Oversight committees working to enhance the development of the sports on the national level.
Last year, 1983 BIG EAST Player of the Year and conference tournament champion Debbie Beckford represented St. John's as the BIG EAST Legend at the 2024 championship.
The eighth-seeded Red Storm will open up the conference tournament at Friday morning at 11 a.m. against ninth-seeded Butler in Uncasville, Conn on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
