Richmond became first St. John’s player to log triple-double in 26 years
NEW YORK – After recording the first triple double by a St. John's player this century, Kadary Richmond was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference office announced on Sunday morning.
Richmond put forth a star effort in Saturday's 86-84 overtime victory on the road at No. 20/20 Marquette. The point guard helped lead the Johnnies to tie the program record for regular seasons wins (27) and picked up their fourth top-25 victory of the season, the program's highest mark since 2010-11.
Richmond finished with 10 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in Milwaukee to become the first Johnnie to post a triple-double on the stat sheet since Metta Sandiford-Artest, formerly Ron Artest against Seton Hall on Jan. 9, 1999. After logging 21 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a triple-overtime loss to then-No. 18/18 Creighton on Jan. 20, 2024 while at Seton Hall, the point guard became the first NCAA Division I player to record multiple triple-doubles against ranked opponents since 1996-97. The Brooklyn native becomes just the seventh high major player to log a triple double this season and the third at St. John's in the last 35 years.
In Saturday's dramatic win over the Golden Eagles at Fiserv Forum, Richmond dished out assist to Luis Jr. for the game-tying lay-up to force the extra period with 10 seconds left in regulation. In the overtime period, the graduate student knocked the ball away from a Marquette rebounder to force a takeaway that led to Zuby Ejiofor's game-winner as time expired.
Richmond earns his fourth honor roll nod of the season and was tabbed BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 24. The team captain averaged 14.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 2.6 steals during BIG EAST play.
The top-seeded Red Storm will face the winner of eighth-seeded Providence and ninth-seeded Butler in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal on Thursday at noon on Peacock.
