Wagner ranked fourth in NCAA Division I with 6.7 assists per game at Troy
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball program inked veteran guard Shaulana Wagner on Thursday.
Wagner was one of the nation's assists leaders this past season ranking fourth in NCAA Division I with 6.7 helpers per game at Troy. The Detroit, Mich., native was an NJCAA All-American at Wabash Valley and will return to the BIG EAST, where she began her collegiate career at Xavier in 2020-21.
"Shaulana brings a wealth of experience to our program and we can't wait to have her on campus," said Head Coach Joe Tartamella. "A proven facilitator, her passing ability will provide a major boost on the offensive end of the floor."
This past season at Troy, the Preseason All-Sun Belt selection appeared in 30 games making 23 starts as the Trojans advanced to the WNIT Championship game. The senior averaged 9.0 points, 6.7 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game, her assist average ranked top-five in the country.
The floor general dished out 202 total assists one of just 11 players in NCAA Division I to record 200 or more helpers this season. The career-best mark of 202 ranks third-most in Troy women's basketball's history.
Wagner made history on Dec. 14, 2024 becoming the first-ever Troy women's basketball player in its Division I to record a triple-double. The guard finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in a 85-67 victory over Memphis. She was one of just 28 players in the country to record a triple-double this season and was named Sun Belt Player of the Week after the historic performance.
In 2023-24, Wagner appeared in 31 games, making 25 starts averaging 4.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game. The primary ball handler helped guide the Trojans to another 20-win season and a trip to the WNIT Fab 4. The junior led the Sun Belt Conference and ranked 28th in the country with an assist-to-turnover ratio at a mark of 2.3.
Prior to arriving in Alabama, she played at the junior college level at Wabash Valley in Illinois from 2021-23. During her final season with the Warriors, Wagner was a WBCA and NJCAA Division I First Team All-American after averaging 19.9 points, 7.7 assists, 6.8 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game during the 2022-23 season. The Detroit native was named the GRAC and Region 24 Player of the Year and brought Wabash Valley to the NJCAA National Tournament Elite Eight.
Wagner will return to the conference where she began her collegiate career with Xavier as a freshman during the 2020-21 season. While with the Musketeers, she appeared in 11 games making two starts logging 4.1 points per game. The rookie played 25 minutes against the Red Storm in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round on March 5, 2021.
Prior to college, Wagner led Edison High School to three state, regional and district championships and compiled a 53-7 overall record during her tenure as a varsity player.
