NEW YORK – With St. John's softball riding a seven-game win streak and atop the BIG EAST standings, London Jarrard was named BIG EAST Player of the Week while Loreley Francia garnered Pitcher of the Week honors, announced by the conference on Monday.
The Red Storm are coming off a 4-0 week in which it toppled Wagner 9-0 on Wednesday before sweeping DePaul this past weekend at home.
Jarrard led the offense, finishing the week 8-for-13 (.615) with six runs scored, three home runs, eight RBIs and a stolen base. The shortstop started the week by going 2-for-4 with a single and a two-run home run against Wagner. Jarrard then reached in six of her eight plate appearances in Friday's doubleheader with DePaul. The Carlsbad, Calif., product notched a solo homer in the opening contest before tallying an RBI single in the latter. On Saturday, Jarrard continued her dominance with another two-hit performance while smacking solo home run.
The award marks the third this season for Jarrard who now becomes the first player in Red Storm history to win the conference's Player of the Week three times in the same season. The senior took home the honor on both March 3 and 17 while adding a nod to the weekly honor roll last week. Jarrard has been spectacular this season, pacing the Red Storm with a .440 batting average, nine doubles, nine home runs and 43 RBIs.
Inside the circle, Francia was stellar last week, turning in a pair of complete games with a 1.08 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 13 innings pitched. The junior opened the week by dominating the Seahawks, allowing just two hits and a walk while punching out 10 batters in the 9-0 shutout victory. Francia then drew the start in game one against the Blue Demons, tossing the full seven innings while giving up two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts.
The Spring, Texas native has now claimed the conference's Pitcher of the Week three times this year after taking it home on Feb. 24 and March 3. Francia joins Madison Morris (2019) as the only pitcher in program history to win the award three times in one season. The junior holds a team-low 1.49 ERA and has picked up 15 wins and 141 strikeouts in 117.1 innings pitched this season.
Jarrard, Francia and the rest of the Johnnies will continue action when they host Stony Brook at Red Storm Field this Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.
