Oziyah Sellers and Zuby Ejiofor combined for 46 points on Tuesday
NEW YORK - The St. John's men's basketball team (12-5, 5-1 BIG EAST) cruised past Marquette, 92-68, on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden for its third straight BIG EAST victory.
After leading by six at the half, the Red Storm dominated the second stanza outscoring the Golden Eagles 52-34 over the final 20 minutes. The Johnnies reached the 90-point mark in back-to-back BIG EAST regular season contests for the first time in program history.
The Johnnies shot over 50 percent from the floor for the third consecutive game and improved to 9-0 on the year when exceeding that mark from the field. The Red Storm's three-game streak of shooting over 50 percent from the floor marks the program's first in league competition since Feb. 7 to 14, 2015. Additionally, St. John's shot a season-high 87.5 percent (21-24 FT) from the charity stripe.
Oziyah Sellers paced the offensive effort going for a season-high 24 points to lead all scorers. The senior guard knocked down four triples and made nine field goals on 56.3 percent shooting.
Zuby Ejiofor logged his seventh consecutive double-figure scoring outing and third 20-plus point in his last five appearances in Midtown Manhattan. The team captain registered 22 points on 72.7 percent (8-11 FG) shooting from the floor. Ejiofor also pulled down seven boards, shot 6-for-8 from the charity stripe and added three assists.
Bryce Hopkins chipped in 12 points, including eight during a 13-0 second half scoring run that. The graduate student shot 4-for-4 from the free throw line and tied with Dillon Mitchell for a game-high eight rebounds. Sadiku Ibine Ayo led the team with a career-high three steals.
Marquette's Chase Ross paced the Golden Eagles (6-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) with 20 points and three steals.
The Red Storm recorded its largest ever margin of victory in 49 meetings against the Golden Eagles, exceeding the previous high of a 20-point triumph on New Year's Day in 2019. After a season sweep last year, St. John's has now tied its longest win streak in the series at four games in a row, matching four straight wins from Feb. 1, 2014 to March 4, 2015.
St. John's raced off to a dominant start hitting five of its first six field goals to start the game and jump out to a 12-2 advantage. The game-opening run was bookended by a pair of triples from Sellers. The Red Storm forced Marquette into two of its four timeouts in the first 2:58 of game time.
Later in the opening stanza, Dylan Darling dropped off a bounce pass to Mitchell on the baseline as he rose up for the two-handed jam, 17-7. Sellers' third 3-ball of the evening capped a 7-0 Red Storm spurt as the lead grew to as many as 11, 26-15, with 10:26 to play in the first half.
Later in the opening frame, Marquette slowly clawed its way back as Ross swiped a scoop and score to bring the Golden Eagles within give, 35-30. Darling responded with a pivotal 3-pointer to spring the advantage back to eight, 38-30, with 1:33 left in the half. Ross closed out the first half scoring with another fastbreak dunk. The Red Storm went into the break with a six-point edge, 40-34, with Sellers leading all scorers with 15 points.
The Johnnies opened the second half with a slam from Mitchell on their first possession off a dish from Sellers. Ejiofor tallied six of the next eight points for the Johnnies as the cushion rose back to double-digits, 50-40.
Hopkins came alive adding eight points during a 13-0 run to blow the game open. The dominant stretch was capped off by a Mitchell dunk as the Johnnies lead expanded all the way to 23, 70-47, with 7:26 remaining.
Still showing hustle in the final minutes with a comfortable lead, Ejiofor chased the ball down all the way down the floor for a fastbreak dunk with 3:17 left to play, 82-59. Joson Sanon chipped in all eight of his points in the final five minutes and Ian Jackson closed the door on the game with a ferocious slam to finish out the scoring.
St. John's will be back in action on Saturday when it meets RV/RV Villanova in the City of Brotherly Love at 8 p.m. on Peacock.
