Bell and Solano Smith honored for their weekend performances
NEW YORK – The St. John's volleyball team collected a pair of BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selections. Chloe Bell and Rashanny Solano Smith were honored for their respective performances over an undefeated weekend, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
This is the first time that Bell has appeared on the conference honor roll in her career, while Solano Smith has been selected to the honor roll for all but two weeks this season.
After claiming a pair of league road wins, the Johnnies sit atop the BIG EAST standings with a 15-4 record and a 5-1 mark in conference play. The Red Storm, along with Marquette and RV Creighton, are the only three teams with a 5-1 record in conference action.
Bell was the most proficient attacker for the Red Storm during a 2-0 road trip to UConn and Providence. The middle blocker swung .535 on the weekend with 14 kills, 10 blocks (1 BS, 9 BA) and five digs.
The Douglasville, Ga., native started the weekend by recording five kills and five blocks (5 BA), with a match-best .571 hitting percentage in a 3-1 win against Connecticut. The next day, the sophomore tallied nine kills and five blocks (1 BS, 4 BA) and swung an even .500 in a four-set victory at Providence. Through three weeks of play, Bell leads the BIG EAST in league matches in hitting percentage at .408, to go along with 39 kills in six contests.
Solano Smith once again anchored the back row to an unbeaten road weekend, with a pair of 19-dig performances and a double-double. The libero tallied 38 digs on the weekend, while adding 19 assists and seven service aces to her weekend log.
Against the Huskies, the senior finished with the first double-double of her career, collecting 19 digs and a career-best 10 assists, while adding three aces to her record in a 3-1 victory. The next day, she nearly replicated the performance with a 19-dig, nine-assist outing with four aces against the Friars.
Bell, Solano Smith and the rest of the Johnnies are back in action this weekend against a pair of the top teams in the BIG EAST. St. John's will welcome Marquette on Friday evening for a 7 p.m. first serve. On Sunday, the Red Storm play host to DePaul with first serve at 2 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena.
