Red Storm pick up its third conference road victory of the season
WASHINGTON D.C. – St. John's Volleyball picked up its third conference road victory of the season on Saturday night, taking down Georgetown, 3-1. The Red Storm have now won six straight matches in McDonough Arena.
After dropping the first set, St. John's (16-7, 6-4 BIG EAST) bounced back to sink Georgetown (12-9, 4-6 BIG EAST) in Washington, D.C. The set scores were 12-25, 25-20, 26-24 and 25-23.
"This was an exhilarating comeback conference road win for our squad, led by Amanda [Caputi] and Lejla [Hadziredzepovic]," said Head Coach Joanne Persico.
St. John's tallied 48 kills on the evening, to go along with 55 digs and 11.0 total team blocks.
Lejla Hadziredzepovic led all players with 16 kills, followed by Carola Tesoro's 13. Amanda Caputi dished out 23 helpers and served a pair of aces. Defensively, Rashanny Solano Smith notched a match-high 20 digs. Kya Harris was a force to be reckoned with at the net with 5.0 total blocks (2 BS, 6 BA) and added four kills to her log.
Georgetown opened the contest hot, running out to a 9-3 advantage and continuing to roll to the media timeout at 15-6. The Hoya momentum couldn't be contained, rolling through the rest of the frame to a 25-12 set win.
Both teams traded points in the early going of the second game, all the way to 6-6. St. John's settled in and ripped off a 6-1 run to force a Georgetown stoppage at 12-7. The stoppage proved to be successful, and the Hoyas clawed their way back into the game to force a Red Storm timeout at 14-12. With both squads knotted at 15-15, the Johnnies were able to build a three-point cushion that held firm for the rest of the way to 25-20, leveling the match at 1-1.
The back-and-forth theme continued in the third frame, but Georgetown was able to grab a four-tally edge into the media timeout at 15-11. The Hoyas' lead began to crack as they entered the red zone courtesy of a 7-1 swing by St. John's. Following a Harris solo rejection, the Johnnies claimed their first lead of the frame at 23-22. A kill from Tesoro triggered set point at 24-22, but Georgetown fended off the threat and tied the contest yet again at 24-24. Solano Smith called set with an ace that danced off the net to give the Red Storm a 26-24 set win and a 2-1 set advantage.
St. John's ran out to a 7-3 lead to start the fourth set, but a trio of unanswered tallies by Georgetown was enough for the visitors to call timeout at 7-6. Both teams traded tallies through the middle portion of the set, but St. John's went up by a pair at the media timeout, 15-13. The slugfest continued with each team exchanging haymakers, but multiple errors by the home team were enough for St. John's to take the lead into the red zone at 21-17. Georgetown was able to erase the lead and knot the contest at 23-23. Following kills from Kendall White and Tesoro, the Red Storm was able to come out on top, 25-23, and snap its four-match skid with a 3-1 victory.
St. John's continues its four-contest road trip next weekend with a pair of Midwest matches. On Friday, Oct. 30, the Red Storm will make its way to Indianapolis for a date with Butler in the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The next day, the Johnnies travel to Cincinnati and take on Xavier on Halloween night.
