The Red Storm men’s basketball team rises back into the top-15 riding a 13-game winning streak
QUEENS, N.Y. - After extending its winning streak to 13 games on Saturday, the program's longest in over four decades, the St. John's men's basketball team (22-5, 15-1 BIG EAST) moved up to No. 15 in the Associated Press and USA TODAY Coaches polls on Monday.
St. John's ascension in the rankings sets up a top-15 showdown on Wednesday when the Johnnies visit No. 6/6 UConn for a 7 p.m. tip-off at PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford.
Last week, the Johnnies improved to a perfect 8-0 in road games this season with a 76-70 victory over Marquette at Fiserv Forum. Then on Saturday, St. John's rolled to a 29-point victory over Creighton at Madison Square Garden. Bryce Hopkins paced the Red Storm with 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game over the two contests and was named the BIG EAST's Player of the Week on Monday.
The Red Storm has now been in the AP Top-25 for the 10th time this season and fourth consecutive week. The Johnnies started the season at No. 5, their highest preseason ranking in program history, and have cracked the poll 24 times over the last two seasons under Head Coach Rick Pitino. It marks the highest total of weeks ranked in a two-season span since 1990-92, when St. John's was in the AP Top-25 30 times.
In the USA Today Coaches poll, the Red Storm moved up one spot after re-entering the rankings on Jan. 19. St. John's has been included in 14 of the 17 coaches polls this season. Dating back to Jan. 20, 2025, the Johnnies have been ranked in the USA TODAY Coaches poll in 24 out of 27 possible weeks.
St. John's 15-1 mark in BIG EAST play matches the 1984-85 team for the best record through 16 league games in program history. The Johnnies have won 11 consecutive games on the road, dating back to last season. The contest between the top-two in the BIG EAST standings will air on Peacock and NBC Sports Network.
