O’Leary named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Rodriguez makes weekly honor roll
NEW YORK – For the fifth consecutive week, at least one St. John's baseball student-athlete has earned BIG EAST Weekly Honors. Liam O'Leary was selected as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, while Lewis Rodriguez earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the league office announced.
This also marks the first time since May 2018 that two Johnnies have earned weekly recognition for three straight weeks, as the Red Storm secured a critical series victory over UConn this past weekend.
In his 10th start of the season O'Leary delivered yet another dominant outing, tossing his second complete game and first complete game shutout in Friday's 4-0 win over UConn to open the series. The performance marked the program's first complete game shutout since Brandon Backman accomplished the feat against Seton Hall in 2022. O'Leary struck out two across 9.0 innings while throwing 122 pitches and facing 32 batters. He did not issue a walk and allowed just four hits in the shutout victory, improving to 5-3 on the season.
The Souderton, Pa., native now holds a 2.57 ERA, ranking second in the BIG EAST. He owns the league's only two nine-inning complete games this season, which also rank fourth across the NCAA Division I rankings. This is the first pitcher of the week recognition of his career and his second appearance on the honor roll this season.
Rodriguez also turned in an impressive week, starting all four games and playing a key role in a 3-1 week for the Johnnies. He slashed .500/.538/.500, going 6-for-12 with three runs scored, three RBIs and two stolen bases in as many attempts. Defensively, he recorded five putouts in left field, including three in the series opener, highlighted by a catch at the warning track for the final out in the 4-0 shutout.
In the first game of the April 18 doubleheader, the junior went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, swiping two bases and an RBI. He sparked a ninth-inning rally with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-4 before scoring the tying run on an RBI triple by LeGrande. The Red Storm completed the comeback to secure a 6-5 win and clinch the series.
O'Leary, Rodriguez and the Red Storm will travel to Rutgers on Tuesday, April 23, for a midweek matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
