The Red Storm enter the weekend tied for first in the BIG EAST standings with six conference games remaining
QUEENS, N.Y. – Tied for the top spot in the BIG EAST standings, the St. John's baseball team will travel to Villanova this weekend for a pivotal three-game conference series.
Game one on Friday at Villanova Park is set for 3 p.m. Saturday's contest will begin at 2 p.m. and first pitch in the series finale slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
Following last weekend's series win over Creighton, St. John's (26-22, 11-4 BIG EAST) sits tied with the Bluejays atop the conference standings. With six league games to play, the
Johnnies will look to secure their 10th BIG EAST Regular Season title in program history.
Red Storm has won all five of their BIG EAST series', including a sweep of Seton Hall and taking two of three from Georgetown, Xavier, UConn and Creighton. After a 1-10 start, St. John's has won 25 of its last 37 games. The Johnnies have dominated series openers, winning five straight and eight of their last nine Friday contests.
In BIG EAST play, St. John's paces the conference in batting average (.325), hits (172) and RBIs (115), while ranking second in doubles (38) and is tied for second with 20 home runs.
The Red Storm has scored at least seven runs in 10 of its 15 league contests. Six everyday starters are batting .314 or better, led by Lewis Rodriguez, who is hitting .452 in conference action.
On Monday, St. John's collected multiple BIG EAST Weekly Honors for the fifth consecutive week, as Jon LeGrande was named Player of the Week and Liam O'Leary earned a spot on the Honor Roll. Their performances fueled a midweek win over Hofstra and a series victory against Creighton, catapulting the Red Storm move into a share of first place in the league standings.
LeGrande put together a standout week, slashing .471/.550/.824 with eight hits, three doubles, a home run, seven RBIs and a run scored. The outfielder stayed hot on Tuesday against Stony Brook, going 3-for-4 with a leadoff solo homer to extend his hitting streak to five games. The senior currently leads the BIG EAST with 23 RBIs in conference play and ranks second with 19 stolen bases on the season.
O'Leary picked up another win last Friday in his fifth BIG EAST start, continuing his role as the team's reliable Friday starter. The junior owns a 2.88 ERA, second-best in the BIG EAST, and is the only pitcher in the league with two nine-inning complete games.
The Souderton, Pa., native is tied for the conference lead with six wins in 12 starts, ranks third with a 1.14 WHIP and has limited opponents to just 2.19 walks per nine innings. He has recorded at least three or more strikeouts in eight of his 12 starts and has gone unbeaten in BIG EAST play with four wins in five outings.
Offensively, Adam Agresti continues to power the Red Storm lineup. The redshirt sophomore launched his 17th home run of the season in game two against Creighton, moving into sole possession of second all-time in program history behind Jeremy Baltz's 24 in 2010.
Agresti ranks second in the BIG EAST with six home runs in conference play and is one of three Johnnies slugging over .600 in league action. He has recorded a hit in 11 of 15 BIG EAST games, including a seven-game hitting streak from April 2 to April 17, where the Red Storm went 6-1 during that span.
St. John's and Villanova (16-26, 3-12 BIG EAST) will meet for the first time this season, in a series that dates back to 1960. The Red Storm hold a 66-36 advantage in the all-time series, including a 26-11 mark at Villanova. The Johnnies have won five of the last six games against the Wildcats.
On Wednesday, Villanova ran away with a midweek win over Towson, 14-1, to close out its non-conference slate. Larry Hotaling led Villanova offensively with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and a triple in the outing.
Coming off a weekend series victory at Georgetown, the first of the season for the Wildcats. Villanova currently leads the conference, averaging 1.90 stolen bases per game and has launched 24 sacrifice flies so far this season. Through 15 league games, the Wildcats are tied with UConn for the second most sacrifice flies (7) in the BIG EAST and knotted at four triples with St. John's and Creighton.
In conference play, two Wildcats are batting over .300 with JoJo Montgomery slashing .385/.442/.590 to lead the team with 15 hits and nine runs against BIG EAST opponents. The go-to arm out of the bullpen has been Graham Moore, a righty owning a 1.80 ERA over 10.0 innings of conference action. Through his five relief appearances, he has only allowed two runs in and struck out 11.
Following the weekend series St. John's return home to host Butler for the final series of the regular season, starting on May 14, at 3 p.m. at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
