Sharpshooter connected on a team-high 53 3-pointers last season
QUEENS, N.Y.– After helping St. John's Men's Basketball win its second straight BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Championships, Oziyah Sellers has signed a deal to join the reigning NBA Champion New York Knicks during this month's Summer League.
Sellers, who helped the Red Storm reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 27 years, averaged 10.3 points during his lone season in Queens. He shot 35.1% from beyond the arc and drained a team-high 53 3-pointers. Sellers also connected on 85.9% of his tries form the charity stripe and posted a 2.4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. In BIG EAST play, Sellers dished out 35 assists and committed just five turnovers, good for an assist-to-turnover ratio of 7-to-1.
The 6-foot-5 guard finished in double figures 19 times with three outings of 20-plus points, including a season-high 24 points against Marquette on Jan. 13. Sellers earned Honorable Mention All-Met honors and was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 15 after posting 19 points on 4-of-7 shooting from deep against Iona at The Garden.
Sellers came to St. John's following one season at Stanford and two at USC. He appeared in 93 games with 41 starts at those stops, averaging 7.3 points on 39.6% shooting from 3-point range during that span.
Sellers will become the fourth Johnnie from last year's team to chase his NBA dreams, as three of his teammates were selected in last week's NBA Draft. BIG EAST Player of the Year Zuby Ejiofor went 23rd to the Atlanta Hawks, Dillon Mitchell went 40th to the Boston Celtics and Bryce Hopkins went 49th to the Denver Nuggets.
